TEFL Volunteer
TEFL certificate helps the teachers in getting a good ESL jobs placement around the world. However, many teachers prefer to work as volunteer teachers in many parts of the world with various NGOs. Volunteer English teaching jobs are available in many countries in Asia, African and South America. The teachers might have to teach for free to the students but the experience is no less rewarding. The exposure to the exotic culture and wonderful amiable people makes the volunteer teaching jobs worthwhile. Teaching English to the kids coming from humble background is a noble job and try to be a part of it.

Volunteer or Intern Abroad - PeruLocation: Ayacucho, Lima,
Peru
Project Description: Volunteering abroad is the opportunity of a lifetime, and our flexible short-term programs let you design your ideal experience in Peru. Volunteer from 1 week to 3 months in meaningful projects that will let you work side-by-side with local people, and experience Peruvian culture like never before. As an international volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions, you're making a positive contribution, by sharing in the goals of a local community that warmly welcomes you. You'll gain new perspectives and insight into the culture and yourself. It's an exciting and personally inspiring experience, and you'll develop memories that will stay with you forever. Peru is a country of amazing physical beauty, home to nearly a tenth of the world's rainforests, a long coastline along the South Pacific Ocean, and the Andes Mountains. For years Peru has been known to international travelers as home to some of the world's greatest ancient wonders, including the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines. Volunteers in Lima are involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, teaching English, assisting teachers, sharing their professional skills/experience, caring for the elderly, caring for people with disabilities, and assisting teachers of special education. Volunteers and interns in Ayacucho are involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, teaching English, assisting teachers, working towards women's empowerment, caring for the elderly, observing and assisting local health professionals, and assisting teachers of special education. Cross-Cultural Solutions is a recognized leader in the field of international volunteering, with more than 4,000 volunteers each year. Founded in 1995, we are an international not-for-profit organization with no political or religious affiliations. CCS has a worldwide staff of more than 300 people, and operates in 12 countries, with administrative offices also located in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. We are in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations, and have been profiled in more than 500 news outlets. Special one-week programs are offered with start dates during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break. Project Details: Remotely located high in the Andes Mountains, Ayacucho has experienced little change over the past 100 years. In Ayacucho, Spanish and Quechua culture live side-by-side. The unique Quechua culture originated in central Peru more than 1500 years ago, and was later adopted by the Inca. However, most Quechua identify with their Inca heritage, and refer to themselves as Runa, or the people. Along with its own unique language, Quechua culture has distinct religious practices and social system. Quechua society places great emphasis on mutual help (ayni), based on reciprocity: help your neighbors, and they will help you in return. Although unknown and untouched by most travelers, Ayacucho has been an important part of Peru's history since prehistoric times. The first signs of life are dated from 20,000 years ago, and were found in caves in Ayacucho. The town has been home to the Wari and Inca Empires and was established as a Spanish city in 1539. Later, it was the site of the Battle of Ayacucho, which played a pivotal role in the fight for Peru's independence. Today, the area is celebrated for its scenic beauty and mountain air. Lima is the epitome of urban, filled with the symbols of commercialization, with fast food chains and popular magazines sold on every corner of the city. Lima is home to more than eight million people; its neighborhoods are sharply segregated by household incomes. Most of our volunteer work occurs in Villa El Salvador, a shantytown born out of necessity during the era of that stands as a model for community development. a remarkable place started on barren sand dunes to the south of Lima by the city's poor in need of a better place to live. Completely community based, Villa El Salvador is a great example of the determination of Peru's people. Cross-Cultural Solutions offers a wide variety of programs and experiences, but all of our volunteers come away with the same benefits: * Personal Growth *Having a Purpose *Gaining Independence and Confidence *Connecting with Others *Seeing a Country from the Inside-Out The CCS Home-Base CCS offers volunteers unprecedented support, and our entire infrastructure is designed around volunteer safety. Each of our programs is located close to a CCS Home-Base, your "home away from home" while volunteering abroad. Each Home-Base is exclusively for CCS volunteers, and designed for your safety and comfort. Here, you can connect with other volunteers and CCS staff, reflect on your experiences, enjoy meals together, read, and relax. The CCS experience also includes cultural and learning activities so that you can learn about the local culture. These include an in-depth orientation, language training, guest speakers and more. Volunteers also have plenty of free time to relax, reflect, or explore the community and country. REQUIREMENTS: No special skills or experience required. Volunteer Teachers Needed for a Charitable SchoolLocation: ,
Saudi Arabia
Project Description: The Kaghan Memorial Trust (KMT) is a non-profit Charitable Trust registered in Islamabad in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated Northern Pakistan in October 2005. The Kaghan Memorial School (KMS) offers free education of a high standard to destitute children in the Kaghan Valley, nestled in the Himalayas. This valley was one of the areas hit hardest by the earthquake, which dramatically exacerbated the prevailing extreme poverty in which its residents had been living for generations. The Kaghan Memorial Trust is dedicated to giving the children of the Kaghan Valley a meaningful education that will help them build better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. The Kaghan Memorial School (KMS) currently maintains places for 136 children, divided into four classes; two sections each of Kindergarten and Grade 1, with an approximately equal ratio of boys and girls in its classrooms. In March 2010 the school will expand by two Kindergarten classes (30 to 34 children per class) as the existing students move up one grade. This expansion will continue each year until the first batch of students completes their A Levels whereupon the full enrollment will total over 900 students. Project Details: KMT currently has four international volunteer teachers working at KMS hailing from Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the US. We are now looking to recruit new teachers to join the teaching team in January 2010 with a commitment to teach until the end of January 2011. As a teacher, your responsibilities will include: ? Planning, preparing and delivering lessons; ? Assessing, recording and reporting on the development and progress of the students; ? Maintaining records of class activities for the reference of future teachers; ? Working in consultation with the rest of the teaching team and the KMT Managing Trustee to develop, update and improve the curriculum and teaching model for your School; ? Managing and maintaining supplies required for your classroom; ? Preparing articles and reports about the School/students to be sent to donors and child sponsors; ? Arranging extra-curricular events for the school and students; ? Any other Trust or School-related assignments that may be handed to you. This position is open for female applicants only. Applicants will need to have a college degree and experience teaching children and/or teaching English as a second language. Urdu is not a necessity as teachers at the school work with a team of local teaching assistants. It is essential that the candidate has a strong sense of commitment to the Trust?s objectives and is willing to volunteer to work for KMT for at least one full year. This is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to bring a real and sustainable difference to a severely deprived community. It will also allow the volunteer to experience a rich and frequently misunderstood culture. The Trust provides its volunteers with accommodation, meals, one return air ticket to their home country per year, visa expenses, local health cover, local transport facilities and a monthly stipend of Pak. Rs. 10,000 (approx US $120) to cover incidental expenses. Interested candidates may apply by writing to Mr. Khurram Khan, Managing Trustee KMT at khurram.khan@kmt.org.pk All applications should be accompanied by a covering letter, a detailed resume, a photo and a copy of your passport. Short listed candidates will be contacted for further information including references. An interview may also be scheduled at a later stage. Volunteer placements in ThailandLocation: Nearby Bangkok ,
Thailand
Project Description: THAILAND borders Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, and Cambodia. The east coast also lies along the Gulf of Thailand while the west coast joins with the Andaman Sea. Because of its many neighbors, each region has a distinct feel unlike any of the others. In the center is Bangkok, the melting pot of traditional cultures and modern influences. In the northern provinces, the traditional Hill Tribe culture can still be seen in the mountainside. The northeast, known as the poorest region of Thailand, is often neglected by tourists but it holds some of the greatest treasures in Thailand. Along the southern coasts lie the pristine beaches popular for sunbathing and rock climbing on its limestone cliffs. The southern tip is best known for its Muslim influences and political unrest. Despite their different backgrounds, Thai people are all characterized by their warm welcoming smiles. With its breathtaking natural beauty and warm and hospitable people, Thailand remains one of the most popular South Asian destinations for tourists. Thailand is divided into four natural regions: The mountains and forests of the North; the vast rice fields of the Central Plains; the semiarid farm lands of the Northeast plateau; and the tropical islands and long coastline of the Southern peninsula. Thailand is the only Southeastern Asian country that was never colonized. You can find remnants of almost 1000 years of history all through the country. Thai is the national language but English is fairly widespread. Our volunteer program invites you to explore this Southeast Asian paradise while contributing to local communities. There are placements in and around Chiang Mai (the gateway to the Northern part of the country with its lush landscapes and rice fields) and Bangkok (the cosmopolitan and business center of Thailand). You can work with disadvantaged children, in local health centers or assist in an elderly home. You can teach English in many places including a Buddhist temple! The population consists of more than 120 ethnic groups, from the red-clad Masai tribes on the Serengeti plains to the Muslims in Zanzibar?s Stone Town. Both Swahili and English are widely used. In the cities Arusha and Dar es Salaam there are numerous understaffed orphanages. You can teach English at local schools, or support local HIV/AIDS initiatives, either by caring for patients or assisting in raising awareness. Masai women?s groups need your help to raise their position in society. It?s a great way to get to know their culture and rural life. You can also volunteer at the tree nursery in the town of Moshi on the slopes of the Kilimajaro. PLEASE NOTE: While most AmeriSpan programs are designed to be able to be done on a tourist visa, Tanzanian law is very strict on visa categories. A recurring problem encountered by Americans is that volunteer activity ? even if the traveler is paying for the volunteer opportunity ? is prohibited on a tourist visa. Project Description: The South American country of CHILE stretches 2,800 miles from the Atacama Desert in the north to glaciers and fjords in the south. About 125 miles wide, Chile lies between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the east. Although its population is mainly European in origin, there remains an indigenous presence a few hours south of Santiago. Gaining its independence from Spain in 1818, Chile?s agriculture and mining industries have helped Chile be an economically dynamic country from early in its history. In 1973, Santiago was the hub of the military coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power. While his 17-year dictatorship brought brutal repression to the country, today Chile is a prosperous democracy. Chile is well-known for its wines, skiing and beaches. Santiago is beautifully set in a wide plain with the backdrop of the Andes and lots of public gardens sprinkled throughout the city. About 4 million people live in this modern city full of skyscrapers and traffic. Santiago offers the comforts and cultural activities of a big city and is close to beaches, mountains and Chile?s lake district. In this wonderful city we can organize customized internships in the professional area of your choice. Just make sure you write a convincing motivation letter so no company can resist you! Even though Chile is for the most part a very modern and developed country, there is no social system to take care of the less advantaged. Your help will be inexpendable in the daycare for the poor and the hospital. Your visit and attention to the elderly who don?t have many family members who visit them will brighten their monotonous days. Further, you can teach English at public schools or organize job-skill workshops at the community center. It is based in Kapama Game Reserve, home to cheetahs, wild dogs, Black-Footed cats, lions, African wild cats, Ground Horn Bills, Sable antelope, and more. You will be part of a ?hands-on? team which mediates the well-being of the animals at the center. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to visit numerous places of interest and attractions in the area, including the renowned Kruger National Park. Included in the program is an unique and memorable experience of an elephant-back safari!
